McKinsey's flagship OpenAI alliance rested on two premises that both collapsed within two weeks.
The Frontier Alliance sold privileged access to OpenAI and privileged delivery of it. A cloud launch ended the first premise, and the lab's own services venture ended the second.
In February 2026, McKinsey and OpenAI announced the Frontier Alliance, pairing QuantumBlack, McKinsey's AI arm, with OpenAI to industrialize the path from strategy to production deployment. BCG, Accenture, and Capgemini signed comparable arrangements. The pitch to enterprise buyers was direct: the premier route to OpenAI capability runs through the firm. It was a clean argument while it held.
It rested on two premises. The first was that buyers reach OpenAI through a partner. On April 28, OpenAI models became available on AWS Bedrock, so any enterprise can now access the same frontier models from AWS, Azure, or the API with no firm required as the procurement layer. The access premise expired that day. The second premise was that buyers still need the firm to deploy the model. On May 4, OpenAI finalized a $10 billion venture built to embed its own engineers inside clients, which answers the delivery question the firm was meant to own.
The Azure-aligned centers of excellence the largest firms built during the exclusive era were real assets, but they were assets tied to a franchise that no longer exists. Adding a second cloud relationship does not repair the problem, because the premise under pressure was intermediation itself, not which cloud a client picks. The alliance pages have not changed. What was a privileged distribution channel on April 27 was a research relationship in search of a new description by May 5.
The postures that survive are the ones that never rented a lab relationship in the first place. A measurement framework that stays deliberately model-agnostic needs no single lab to operate. Vendor-neutral governance advisory was never credentialed on privileged access, so it is largely unaffected. The exposed position is the specific one that made the lab partnership the product.
